Harold W. Layfield
1932 - 2018
Eustis, FL - Harold William Layfield, age 86, died peacefully on Thursday morning, April 5, 2018. His death was as good a death as any might hope for--asleep in the arms of one beloved.
Harold Layfield was born on February 23, 1932 in Braxton County, West Virginia, the eighth of ten children to Bernard and Effie Rae (Radcliff) Layfield.
He is survived by younger siblings Kenneth Layfield and Olga Jean (Layfield) Vargo; his children Stephen Michael (Mike) Layfield, William Harold (Bill) Layfield, and Tina Michelle (Layfield) Helms; grandchildren Gabriel Colin Sponsler, Leah Nicole (Johnson) Hetrick and John Harold Helms; and great grandchildren Luke David Hetrick and Leona Luna Sponsler.
Harold Layfield, a veteran of the Korean War, returned to the U.S. and married Leona Mae Ham. He was a provider for his family and was a fixer of everything broken. He was a maker, from the metal hammer he made in high school to the garage he designed, built and then used to maintain the family vehicles. He was a little league coach who, with no formal training or experience, lead his team, the Mecca Cubs, to two championships, while ensuring that every team member got to participate. He and Leona hosted foreign exchange students when most parents would have been exhausted and relieved to have their grown-up children leave home.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 14, from 1:00PM to 2:00PM, with the funeral service to begin at 2:00PM, at Crown Hill Burial Park in Vienna, Oh.
Burial will take place in Crown Hill Burial Park.
Selby-Fox Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
